Potato psyllids are important potato pests because they can spread a bacterium that causes zebra chip disease. Zebra chip reduces yields by causing premature vine death, and quality by causing an internal tuber browning defect.

2 Efficacy ratings denote the relative ability of a pesticide to control its target. The ratings are E = excellent, G = good, F = fair/suppression; P = poor, and ND = no data. Efficacy ratings are based on the inherent toxicity of the pesticide against its target, the likelihood that the target will contact or ingest the product as applied, duration of impact on the target, and undesired effects, such as negative impacts on natural enemies that could lead to future pest outbreaks.
3 Rate per acre per application. Refer to the product label for maximum use rate per season.
4 Reentry interval.
5The minimum pre-harvest interval. Some products do not list PHI.
Note: always read and follow the directions on the pesticide label.

Pesticide | MOA1 | Efficacy2 | Rate per Acre3 | REI4 | PHI5 | Notes |
Admire Pro (foliar) imidacloprid | 4A | G (a) | 1.3 fl oz | 12 h | 7 d | Apply to foliage when adult potato psyllids are migrating. |
Lannate LV methomyl | 1A | F | See Label | 48 h | 6 d | The label doesn’t mention psyllids, but applications made to target other pests will knockback adult psyllids. It will also knockback some predatory insects. Products with longer residuals are preferred for controlling psyllids as they slowly migrate into potatoes. Better for late season to knockback multiple pests. |
Blackhawk spinosad | 5 | G (n) | See Label | 4 h | 7 d | Psyllids are not on the label, but applications targeting other pests may control psyllid nymphs. No adult activity. Translaminar, so it should get to the nymphs on the underside of leaves. |
Transform WG sulfoxaflor | 4C | E (n+a) | 2.0-2.25 oz | 24 h | 7 d | Early-to-mid season application will cover many incoming, migrating pests, including psyllids. Translaminar so it should get to the nymphs on the underside of leaves. Watch the Contour Maps in the Potato DAS every week to monitor regional potato psyllid population densities. |
Rimon novaluron | 15 | F (n) | 12 fl oz | 12 h | 14 d | Apply when psyllid eggs are hatching/nymphs are present. This product does not control adults. The Rimon label recommends applying with an adulticide for optimum control. No systemic or translaminar activity, so it may not always reach nymphs on the underside of leaves. |
Carbine 50 WG flonicamid | 29 | E (n+a) | 2.0-2.8 oz | 12 h | 7 d | Apply when adult psyllids are migrating into the field and are depositing eggs. Rapid feeding cessation, so it is a good choice to limit zebra chip spread. Translaminar, so it will control nymphs on the underside of leaves, but not systemic. |
Fulfill pymetrozine | 9B | G (n+a) | 5.5 oz | 12 h | 14 d | Apply when adults are migrating into the field and are depositing eggs. Translaminar, so it should control nymphs on the underside of leaves, but not systemic. |
Movento HL spirotetramat | 23 | E (n+a) | 2.0-2.5 fl oz | 24 h | 7 d | Apply at the first appearance of psyllids, or about 10 days before an earlier systemic insecticide breaks down. It is best used early in the outbreak cycle due to its systemic properties and to take advantage of its efficacy against all psyllid life stages. |
Asana XL esfenvalerate | 3 | G (n+a) | 2.9-5.8 fl oz | 12 h | 7 d | Apply when adult psyllids are migrating into the field and it's before mid-June. If early nymphs are present, it may not control the nymphs that are on the underside of leaves where the product may not be as well distributed. |
Agri-Mek SC abamectin | 6 | E (n+a) | 1.75-3.5 fl oz | 12 h | 14 d | Apply when psyllids are present, especially if eggs are hatching. It will control all life stages and is a good choice when eggs and nymphs are present. Translaminar, so it will control nymphs on the underside of leaves. |
Brigade 2EC bifenthrin | 3 | G (n+a) | 2.1 to 6.4 fl oz | 12 h | 21 d | Apply when adult psyllids are migrating into the field, but only if it’s before mid-June. If early nymphs are present, it may not control the nymphs on the underside of leaves where the product is not well distributed. |
Athena abamectin (avermectin) and bifenthrin | 3, 6 | G (n+a) | 10-17 fl oz | 12 h | 21 d | Apply when psyllids are present, but only if it’s before mid-June. In addition to adults, it should control nymphs if they show up early in the season. |
Baythroid XL beta-cyfluthrin | 3 | G (n+a) | 1.6-2.8 fl oz | 12 h | 0 d | Apply when adult psyllids are migrating into the field and it’s before mid-June. If early nymphs are present, it may not control nymphs on the underside of leaves where the product is not well distributed. |
Warrior II lambda-cyhalothrin | 3 | G (n+a) | 1.28-1.92 fl oz | 24 h | 7 d | Apply when adult psyllids are migrating into the field and it’s before mid-June. If early nymphs are present, it may not control nymphs on the underside of leaves where the product is not well distributed. |
Mustang Maxx zeta-cypermethrin | 3 | G (n+a) | See Label | 12 h | 1 d | Psyllids are on the label but not in the potato section. Apply when adult psyllids are migrating into the field and it’s before mid-June. It may not control nymphs on the underside of leaves where the product is not well distributed. |
Dimethoate 400 EC dimethoate | 1B | F-P (a) | See Label | 48 h | 0 d | The label doesn’t mention psyllids, but applications made to target other pests will knockback psyllids. Products with longer residuals are preferred for controlling psyllids as they slowly migrate into potatoes. |

Products with longer residuals are preferred for controlling psyllids that slowly migrate into potatoes. Torac can control all life stages, but it may not always reach nymphs on the underside of leaves. |
Exirel cyantraniliprole | 28 | E (a) | 13.5-20.5 fl oz | 12 h | 7 d | Apply before psyllid populations build. Target the adult life stage. Rapid anti-feeding activity will also help to limit spread of zebra chip disease. |
Minecto Pro abamectin, cyantraniprole | 6, 28 | E (n+a) | 10 fl oz | 12 h | 14 d | Apply when adults are migrating into the field, especially if they are depositing eggs. Rapid anti-feeding activity will also help to limit spread of zebra chip disease. Controls all life stages. Translaminar, so it will control nymphs on the underside of leaves. |
